PROPERTY OF N. GANTRY — KEEP AHT

the book

(it ain't a diary. it's records. fer work.)

Monday. Cold as a meat locker.

Foreman says I'm runnin the practice shifts nahw. All of em. Says I got people skills a loud voice.

Fine. But I ain't babyin nobody. First rookie t'day put a wall in an open lane an let a jagoff walk right past it into our hero's mustache. I says hon, the lanes go STRAIGHT ACROSS. That's the whole rule. That's the ONE rule.

(they won their next scrap tho. didn't tell em I was proud. wrote it here instead.)

Wednesday. Packed the good thermos.

Ate lunch up on the high beam like always. Best seat in the city an nobody knows it but me an the pigeons.

lunch pail on a girder above the citythe office

Sammich, thermos, girder, sky. Somebody aughta put that on a card.

Thursday. Payday.

The chipped ham beast got in the break room again. Ate half a deck a cards an Stash's entire sammich. Ban him from the buildin? Can't. He's on the ROSTER.

(drew this while he watched. he seemed flattered. that's the problem with him.)

Saturday. Didn't sleep good.

Worked a night shift. Whole different city after dark — ya draft whatever crew shows up an ya ride it as deep as it goes. Lost my third life on rung eight to a wall I shoulda seen comin from Ohio.

Ya know what tho. Ya pick yer cards up off that floor. An ya start again.

Tuesday. Some jagoffs from PHILLY rolled in.

Five hours east on the turnpike an they show up HERE, talkin abaht their bell with the crack in it an their OPINIONS abaht sandwiches. Brung a whole deck a their own — hunnert an eighty cards, I counted.

Foreman says be hospitable. I says I'll be hospitable when they're back on the turnpike. We're settlin it on the table. Ten shifts. Their best against ours.

(their cards ain't bad. did NOT write that. this page is wrong.)

Sunday. Quiet.

New rookies keep showin up fer practice shifts. Don't know where they all come from. Somebody's puttin the word aht, I guess.

If yer one of em — clock in early, keep yer lanes covered, an don't feed the ham beast no matter what faces he makes.
